James Cameron Deepest Spot On Earth Sea Exploration Dive [VIDEO]

After exploring some deep and strange spots of the universe in his fiction movies, the creator of the movie ‘Avatar’, James Cameron, reached the deepest spot on the planet in reality. The trip down is a nearly 7-mile dive which took Cameron more than 2 hours to make on his deep see exploration.

According to Yahoo news, the spot is called Mariana Trench which is about 200 miles southwest of the Pacific island of Guam. The bottom of the trench is at a depth of 35,756 feet. To get an idea on how deep that is; the trench is about the height of Mount Everest plus another mile on top, or about 120 miles deeper than the Grand Canyon! The water pressure at the depth is almost equivalent to weight of 3 SUVs on your toe.

The trip was made possible using a very special submarine. The small lime-green submersible is called “Deepsea Challenger” which weighs about 12 tons and took about 8 years to build in Australia under absolute secrecy, according to theAge.com.au. The thick tiny submarine has only room for the filmmaker, and he navigates it using a joystick standing up in a hunched position!

‘Heck of a ride!’: James Cameron returns from Mariana Trench

Cameron planned on spending around 6 hours exploring and filming the bottom of the trench. According to the Yahoo News, this is the second ever attempt to reach the deepest spot on the planet. In 1960, Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh, a U.S. Navy Capitan made the same journey down. It took Piccard and Walsh about 5 hours reach the bottom using the technology of 1960s. Apparently the 2 men were only able to stay 20 minutes and did not see much because of poor visibility caused by their craft. Cameron’s high-tech submersible is more advanced and better equip to explore the deep, with much better visibility.

What to expect to see at the bottom? Take a look at this video form NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). The creature in this video is not too far from creatures in Cameron’s own movies!!
